Set in Poland in 1943. Two middleclass men flee Warsaw, making for the country estate of their friend Hippolyte. During their journey they meet a group of partisans. Adapted from the novel by Witold Gombrowicz, the film is a reflection, among other things, of the Nazi occupation of Poland, as seen from the standpoint of the reletively priviledged but still subtly terrorized landed gentry.
