The first of five lectures about materials, which were delivered by Professor Anthony Ryan for the 2002 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, under the series title: Smart stuff. In it he discusses the "engineering masterpiece" that is a spider's web. Built in seconds, each strand in the web is a highly engineered polymer fibre, 10 times stronger than steel.
