The first programme in the fourth six-part series, in which five scientists are set challenges in an isolated location. In this series they are based at an abandoned silver mine on the edge of the hostile environment of Death Valley, in eastern California, one of the driest and most desolate landscapes on Earth, a location used by NASA to test space equipment. The team of scientists is set a series of space-inspired challenges to be completed within three days. In this programme, they are challenged to produce a remote-controlled space exploration rover vehicle, and to find and purify water. The scientists are: botanist Ellen McCallie; geologist Iain Stewart; physicists Jonathan Hare and Kathy Sykes; and chemist Mike Bullivant.
