Artists' Moving Image
In 1977 American Brakhage and Englishman Le Grice ,two highly influential figures in the world of experimental film, met to discuss their respective positions and implicitly that of their national contemporaries. It was a spirited, if sometimes fiery, exchange and they both selected films to illustrate the points under discussion. This is an audio recording of an event that took place in May 2016 during the BFI's retrospective of Malcolm Le Grice's work in which the same 16mm films (inc. works by Bruce Baillie, Marie Menken, Brakhage and Le Grice) were projeced and the original, revealing, wide-ranging transcript was read by Amber Felix (playing Le Grice) and Herb Shellenberger (as Brakhage). The afternoon included breaks and Le Grice looked back at the event from a contemporary perspective in a discussion with the academic and critic Erika Balsom.
