Criticism being subjective, and the notion of ‘ten greatest’ therefore meaningless, I’ve chosen instead ten favourite films – touchstones in my own life, to which I return time and again. Two or three selections might change, depending on the day and according to my mood (perhaps Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s A City of Sadness for the Kar-Wai; or Mitchell Leisen’s Midnight instead of My Man Godfrey; or I might incline toward Mouchette over, say, the Malle). But the remaining seven at least are fixed, fiercely loved, unassailable.
