Being a writer/director rather than a film academic or historian, I’ve made my choice from films that either sparked my interest in cinema or continue fuelling my desire to explore it. I don’t see movies as conforming to a hierarchy of importance or aesthetics. There are endless others that could have been listed below but I’ve stopped at 10. Or rather, I’ve cut Badlands, Terrence Malick’s 1973 film, from the top of the list in order to comply. All the chosen films made me both think and feel, and presented some sort of challenge to my ideas or emotions. This is the reason they have made my very personal cut.
