There is a group of films that I feel are like family, in that I didn’t choose any of them. Hence, no works by ‘classical’ Japanese film masters at all. Yet, no Yamanaka, no Akutagawa and no Ishida here. I also didn’t choose any films that feel like my relatives. So, no such films by pantheon cineastes such as Keaton, Ford, Welles or Renoir. Plus, no pieces by Genina, Vorhaus, Jennings or even Angelopoulos. Why not? Simply because I feel great hesitation in praising any members of my own family or relatives in public. The films of my list all feel like friends from afar. They once gave me a hard slap on the cheek. I can’t forget that pain and pleasure.
