These are all films that use cinema in innovative ways to explore human relationships in a social setting. I think they all expand something about cinema: they don’t merely fill an existing form with content. They also expand something for the viewer in the dimension of feeling. Each uses the medium of film to produce a sense both of the material situations of their protagonists and, simultaneously, of the emotional and spiritual subtleties of their interactions, which transcend and yet are rooted in the material world. Film itself carries us to places and emotions – these films show how they are connected and move us through new ground in both.
