There is of course much missing – so many brilliant directors and memorable films. My list is comprised of a lot of melodramas, films with female protagonists and – without having to try out of tokenism – female directors. I always get annoyed when I see these kind of lists that feature hardly any women, or worse, none at all – as though women have contributed nothing to cinema history and there are no great films by women. If I was to end up stranded on a desert island with copies of these films I would be blissfully happy to watch them over and over again. They are all brilliant and enduring. They have all had a profound effect on me.
