These are the films that I've returned again and again to be humbled and inspired. In addition, each of the filmmakers above has a body of work that commands my respect and devotion. So it pains me to leave off Altman's The Long Goodbye, Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and Wiseman's Primate – the best films, in my view, from directors I also adore for their inspiring careers.
