Gallery: five new London cinemas

In the August 2015 issue of Sight & Sound we present a special six-page report on the range of new cinemas that have opened up in the capital this year – from upmarket flagships of arthouse circuits to the community-run Deptford Cinema and Close Up Cinema’s bastion of traditional celluloid projection.

While Edward Lawrenson picks through the debates around price, quality, competition and community in the magazine, we present here a series of the photographs taken of the new sites for us by Etienne Gilfillan, with extra images from a continuing series of videos of the sites filmed for us by Edward Lawrenson.

Farewell, Leicester Square: a special report in the August 2015 issue of Sight & Sound

New cinemas, mostly of the swish, upmarket and upgraded variety, began to appear across London a few years back and in the last 18 months this trend has accelerated to such an extent that a new standard of comfort and immersion has become the norm. Is this enriched yet often expensive experience the only way to go? Edward Lawrenson reports on five new London cinemas, which set out to unpick the issues behind this welcome building boom.
