In the mid-18th century, English princess Caroline Mathilda is due to be married to King Christian VII of Denmark. Keen to be a dutiful wife and Queen, Caroline's hopes are soon dashed when she discovers the King's true madness - but then she finds herself enraptured by the King's physician who also happens to be a radical libertarian.
