Amiable millionaire Charles Pike (Fonda) and Jean Harrington (Stanwyck) meet on a transatlantic liner and fall in love. Jean and her father are card-sharps, conning the rich passengers out of their money. When Charles discovers this, he wants nothing more to do with her. So Jean decides to get revenge by masquerading as Lady Eve, an English aristocrat, to seduce him once more.
