Knowledge and Collections Developer

Joanna White

Joanna writes code and develops workflows to help solve the BFI National Archive’s challenges in collections acquisition, validation, documentation, digital preservation and access. Joanna is passionate about open source software and utilises Python, Bash and Linux tools alongside the key open source applications for audiovisual archiving – FFmpeg, Media Conch / Media Info, RAWcooked, VLC – to build automations for high volume complex data and digital preservation activities.

Before joining the BFI in December 2019, Joanna worked for six years as a Developer Archivist at the Media Archive for Central England in Lincoln, where she implemented open source workflows to manage video tape capture and DPX film scan preservation. In addition she aided implementation of a colour grading suite, developed as a colourist, and managed post-production and supply of digital assets to broadcast and domestic clients.

Joanna has 25 years of experience as an independent video producer, and camera woman for ITV Yorkshire’s Calendar News programme. She graduated with an MA in Digital Media from the University of Lincoln in 2015, and recently enjoyed exhibiting digital video art projects at science and technology festivals across Lincolnshire.
