Michael Norman

Digital Media Specialist

Michael Norman

As a member of the BFI’s Data and Digital Preservation team, Michael is Data Specialist for the Heritage 2022 Video Digitisation project. The project’s aim is to digitise and digitally preserve 100,000 of the most at-risk and valuable videotapes, currently in the care of regional and national archives. As Data Specialist Michael supports the delivery and preservation of digital files created from the project – stewarding the files through various delivery, validation, documentation, preservation and supply workflows.

This is Michael’s first position at the BFI having completed The National Archives’ National Lottery Heritage funded traineeship ‘Bridging the Digital Gap’ in December 2019. The traineeship seeks to develop a diverse workforce in the archive sector, tackling the technical skills gap facing digital archiving. As a cohort in the traineeship’s inaugural year, Michael was seconded to the East Anglian Film Archive in Norwich, where he contributed to the archive’s film and video digitisation jobs as well as helping to develop digital preservation workflows. Michael graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2008, with an MA (Hons) in Film and Television Studies.
