Working with archival footage in documentary cinema raises key questions at different stages of the creative process – from researching and directing to editing. When present-time stories cross paths with historical events, filmmakers are presented with a wide scope of options, encompassing the use of sound and voiceover, the framing of pre-existing footage and the myriad ways of editing the materials. On a broader level, when we ask the archive questions, the archive questions us back and compels us to examine the way we approach the past.
A panel of documentary experts and filmmakers share their experiences in handling artistic and production challenges in their work with the archive.
