Strategic motivations and a genuine desire to work with foreign partners often guide a producer’s first steps into a co-production. From that point on, a complex jigsaw starts taking shape. Finding the right place for each piece requires extensive knowledge of public and private funding in different countries, and of trends in the international marketplace. Decisions taken on finance and talent are likely to have an impact on distribution, and the engagement of local audiences.

Four award-winning producers take us through their experiences with international coproductions, from eight and nine-party co-productions like Sentimental Value or The Settlers, to European-US ones such as Orphan, or collaborations with Asian partners for films such as Diamonds in the Sand. The panel will also share their experience of working with, or from, the UK when building an international project.
