Synopsis

Britain's first large-scale reversible pumped-storage hydro-electric scheme at Cruachan, Argyll. At off-peak times cheaply produced surplus energy from nuclear and fuel-fired stations is used to pump water up-hill to a reservoir to be available to the generators when demand for power is high. The construction stages are recalled, showing the tunelling operation and carving out the great hall, seven stories high, for the turbines and generators
