Romantic comedy drama. Jaded British film star Robert Maine, on his way back to America to make a film, decides to get off the train at the little English seaside town where he trod the boards as a hope-filled young actor. Hoping to recapture a sense of the happiness of his youth, he takes his old room in a boarding house for theatrical types, and there he gets swept up into the backstage drama unfolding with a local troupe who are having trouble putting on a play at the repertory theatre on the pier. Initially keeping his true identity a secret from them, Maine helps them put their play on, but his emotional entanglement with the young lady star (whose boyfriend wrote the play) begins to bring a cloud over the whole enterprise.
