An Unearthly Child (1963)

Film details

Susan Foreman is a precocious student at Cole Hill comprehensive school and an enigma to her teachers, particularly Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Ian, who teaches chemistry, finds her scientific knowledge to be far in excess of the average teenager, while Barbara is continually exasperated by Susan's historical polemicising. Together they determine to investigate her background and follow her home one night only to discover her address to be nothing but a junkyard housing a police box. Presently they encounter an old man who takes more than usual exception to their enquiries. An altercation ensues which leads to their entering the police box and the discovery that it is in fact a time machine, the Tardis (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) and that Susan and her 'grandfather' are wanderers in the fourth dimension, cut off from their own planet. Fearing the consequences of further exposure, the old man refuses the schoolteachers their freedom and dematerialises the Tardis, sending it spiralling into the time vortex. As the incongruous form of the police box appears in the midst of a snowy wasteland, a monstrous shadow falls across it.
