Experimental. Zero has an affair with another woman which ends in disaster, for she mockingly rejects him when he offers her his heart, and his adoring wife Beatrix dies. Zero is fantastically represented, wearing a steeple-crowned hat and playing on a trombone. Psychological reactions are expressed by photographic devices such as the multiplication of faces in a revolving circle, or a figure gradually receding into the distance. A musician grinding out tunes on his barrel organ is a recurrent them, emphasising the derisive element. It is an impressionistic picture, prepared mainly with paper scenery arrange in different perspectives.
