MARTHA (1974)

This ruthless dissection of a marriage is like Douglas Sirk on steroids.

Film details

Introduction

When Martha, a 30-something virgin, falls for the masterful Helmut (Peeping Tom’s Karlheinz Böhm) he soon seeks to control all aspects of her life.

The prowling camera and extravagant décor create an eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere, scarcely relieved by moments of high comic absurdity. One of Fassbinder’s lesser-known masterpieces.
