Lancashire. Bill lives with his father and grandfather, both workers in the cotton mill which is facing redundancies. Bill begins to play truant and dreams of becoming 'a wild man of the moors'; he also becomes obsessed with the 'Haverston Beast' an unidentified animal which has been savaging livestock.
