Joachim Dallayrac, an operatic tenor, announces his retirement and retires to his country home. He decides to accept one student, Sophie a beautiful, young singer with whom a relationship develops. Joachim also accepts a second pupil, Jean, a pick-pocket who distracts his victims by singing Offenbach. Jean falls in love with Sophie, who only has thoughts for Joachim, until she sees a tender moment between him and his wife, Estelle. Sophie and Jean enter a singing competition, arranged by one of Joachim's old rivals and Jean ends up in a competition with a singer with an uncannily similar voice. While the contest is in progress Joachim dies quietly at home.
