Synopsis

Traces the rise and fall of the asylum, from the mostly private madhouses of the 18th century, to the over-crowded asylums of the 19th and 20th centuries, where squalor and inhuman mechanical restraint became the norm. Also covers the wholsesale murder of the insane in Nazi Germany, the introduction of drugs into the asylums the 1950s and the question marks over the future of the institutions.
