Chile during the last years of the Pinochet regime. A Santiago schoolteacher is condemned to internal exile by the military government for denouncing the disappearance of a colleague. He is taken from the city to a remote and barren village in the south of Chile. Here he has to adapt as best he can to a place that has suffered repeated massive destruction from spring tides and earthquakes, and to its downtrodden people.
