Based on the love affair between T.S. Eliot and Vivienne Haigh-Wood. In 1914 spoilt socialite Vivienne Haigh-Wood visits Merton College, Oxford, with her brother to see American student Tom Eliot. Following a whirlwind romance the couple marry and honeymoon in Eastbourne. However, Vivien's wild mood swings lead her into a breakdown, which is treated by an incorrect diagnosis and the prescription of addictive drugs. After a series of public embarrassments and breakdowns, Tom has Vivien committed to an asylum, where it is ten years before she is correctly diagnosed.
