Synopsis

A series of six programmes exploring the first three years of child development. The individual programme titles and themes are: `In the beginning' on how much a new baby can see, hear, smell, taste and understand, and when and how it learns to identify its parents; `First steps' on a baby's first attempts to move, sit up, crawl, and finally walk; `Taking hold' on how a baby progresses from an instinctive grab at a finger, to mastering complex dexerity and creativity in just two years; `Word of mouth' how a baby progresses from a gurgle to fluent speech in three years, and what parents can do to encourage it; `The Thinker' how to recognise the hard-to-detect signs of reasoning, thinking and problem solving in a baby, and what is happening when a baby plays; `You and me' explores how children establish fundamental relationships with parents, other adults and each other during their first three years of life, and how to spot the warning signs of jealousy, shyness and other subtle emotions.
