- Deep Tunnel Alternative
A programme in a six-part series exploring the limits of human achievement in the field of engineering. Examines the problems facing Hugh Doherty the engineer in charge of excavating the new Jubilee Line extension of the London Underground in record time. To speed up the work, he was using a spray-on, rapid setting concrete lining but another tunnel near Heathrow Airport using the same method collapsed bringing work on the extension to a halt. The breakdown of trusted tunnelling machines, shifting sands and the dangers of damaging famous London landmarks such as Big Ben were adding to his worries.
