The fourth programme in a five-part series in which Charles Wheeler analyses the profound changes that have taken place in American society since the 1960s. Considers America's growing prison population and the effects of Ronald Reagan's anti-drug offensive on the country's judicial system. This is said to have led to longer average sentences for drug-related crimes than for those imposed for manslaughter, armed assault and rape, and to an enlarged federal prison population some sixty percent of whom were convicted for non-violent narcotics offences.
