Synopsis

About the last 15 years of Degas' life, a period during which he abandoned the Impressionist style of his earlier work and produced a vast number of pastels and paintings, which in the bold use of colour and form, look forward to the 20th century. Visits the archives of the Bibliotheque Nationale for photographic evidence of Degas and his friends, and reconstructs the chaotic, filthy studio in which he worked. The special qualities of his late pictures and their appeal to artists are discussed by present-day painters, Howard Hodgkin and Paula Rego.
