In 1663 Father Antonio Viera, a Jesuit priest and close friend of the late King Joao IV, was summoned before the Inquisition. Plots at court have weakened his position and he flees to Rome where he enjoys the protection of the Pope. In Rome, his reputation grows until he is summoned to the court of Queen Christina of Sweden as her confessor. He misses his home country, Portugal, and is coldly received by the new king. Accordingly, he leaves for Brazil where he spends the last years of his life.
