The last programme in a six-part series on the human body. Looks at the development of early human life and the advances made in embryonic medicine. In particular considers the technique of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis or PGD which involves growing embryos in the lab, screening them for defective genes that cause inherited genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis before placing in the womb. Also explores ways in which eggs can be grown outside the body to avoid exposing them to harm, for instance chemotherapy in cancer patients, and discusses how genetic engineering of sperm might be used to prevent genetic diseases.
