The girls live with their strict Boer stepmother, and the boy is the son of the farm manager Otto. Both Lyndall and Waldo have an intellectual curiosity, with the latter also loving to work with his hands and machinery. Together the children create an ingenious sheep-shearing maching, but then have a run in with a crook, Bonaparte Blenkins, who comes to the farm and woos the stepmother in the belief that she is rich.
