The BFI Film and Media Conference (formerly the BFI Media Conference) is a unique CPD opportunity for teachers of KS4/5 Film, Media and English. It offers sessions packed with opportunities to hear from and talk directly with industry practitioners, researchers and other teachers, leaving you full of ideas to take back to your students.

June 2023 conference

The 2023 conference programme launched with a fascinating online session from the BFI Research and Statistics Unit, presenting the very latest figures and research on UK film production and audiences 2022-23.

Day one at BFI Southbank focused on production, offering a deep dive into the wonders and possibilities of short format with top tips from industry insiders from film, TV and games, case studies of successful classwork and hands-on ‘film in a day’ filmmaking led by Chocolate Films.

On day two we welcomed our keynote speaker Kiran Nataraja, Director of Content Strategy and Planning at Channel 4, plus industry speakers covering marketing campaigns, BBC News and social media, film criticism and more.

Our research special focus welcomed Clive Nwonka to speak on his work and upcoming book on Black youth identity on screen, and teaching strand sessions included everything from ideology to theory, from women and horror to exploring narrative with animation. There was also the valued opportunity to meet and discuss the coming academic year with AQA, OCR, WJEC Eduqas, IB, BFI Education, Into Film, the English and Media Centre and the Media Education Association.
