Hugo (2011)

Date: 10 March 2026
Time: 10:30am to 2:00pm
Location: BFI Southbank

Event details

This event will take pupils back in time to the dawn of film and cinema, with a few explosions and special effects thrown in! An ideal study day for those who are reading Brian Selznick’s ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’, we begin the event with an introduced screening of Martin Scorsese’s family-friendly mystery film, Hugo (2011).

There is no better way to watch this film that explores the history and magic of cinema than on the silver screen itself!

After a break for lunch, we look in more detail at the history of film referenced in the story of Hugo, travelling back to examine early filming devices and find out how Georges Méliès and others pioneered the development of the film industry. We will discover how sound, music and Technicolor were introduced into film, watching clips from A Trip to the Moon and Singin’ in the Rain, and move to the world of special effects. Through interactive activities and discussion, pupils will learn how film developed from zoetropes to blockbusters.
