11am to 12pm, 23 March, online
In recent years, there has been a re-evaluation of early cinema from a LGBTQAI+ perspective, including a reappraisal of pre-Production Code cinema’s exploration of gender and sexuality. It is hoped students and teachers will be able to appreciate how films like Salome (1923), Algie The Miner (1912) and Anders als die Andern / Different From The Others (1919) challenge our assumptions about how silent film dealt with sexuality. We’ll also consider how representations of gender and sexuality from this era are still relevant today.
