Independent Film Sustainability Handbook: Communication and engagement

Communicating effectively with cast, crew, and audiences can help build understanding and support for sustainable practices.

Communication can help gain buy-in for sustainability initiatives you might want to trial, encourage cast and crew to make suggestions to help reduce environmental impacts, and make the whole process feel collaborative and inspiring.

Engagement can take place through a variety of means:

  • Climate content: authentic inclusion of climate or sustainability-related themes on-screen
  • Sustainability kick-off calls: a call or meeting with all heads of department (HODs) or cast early in pre-production to discuss the films sustainability objectives, and how they can support and work towards the agreed sustainability standards
  • Green memo: an engaging and accessible document which outlines your sustainable mode of working over the course of a production (this is a mandatory part of Albert certification)
  • Cast and crew surveys: surveys which ask questions regarding what sustainable practices the cast & crew would be happy to see on the production, or on future productions
  • Final green memo: highlights what the production has done through the same format as the green memo
  • Industry and audience comms: highlights what the production has done to audiences and industry
