Independent Film Sustainability Handbook: Inclusivity and sustainability

Inclusivity and sustainability go hand in hand in creating a better film industry for the future.

It is important to consider sustainable decisions do not overlook or overtake inclusivity but work with it. Here’s a few different things to consider when creating an inclusive & open environment:

Physical

Recognise that not everyone can hop on and off multiple trains in one journey but would find different modes of transport to be more accessible.

Psychological

Some people use assistive technologies, like screen readers, so ensure documents like green memos are also provided in HTML/easy read formats as well as PDFs or translated into BSL videos. On top of this, some people deal with eco anxiety day-to-day; ensure you provide links to eco anxiety resources.

Caring

Caring responsibilities mean some carers and parents need to have access to cars in case of emergencies. If someone says they need their own car for personal reasons, help ensure they can park near set/location rather than questioning it.

Socioeconomic

Instead of saying everyone must bring reusable water bottles to set, include a line asking for crew and cast to let production know if they don’t have one so alternatives can be organised.

Dietary

Make sure when cast and crew are hired that you’ve requested information regarding any food intolerance, as well as religious and cultural dietary requirements.
