“Monte Hellman made westerns unlike any before or since”: Quentin Tarantino hymns Ride in the Whirlwind

In our February 1993 issue the young director Quentin Tarantino, hot off the success of his debut Reservoir Dogs, wrote this reflection on great westerns and particularly Monte Hellman’s Ride in the Whirlwind, with its mix of innocence and desperation. We republish it in memory of the latter director, who has died aged 91.
