Good Work research

Design Otherwise has launched a new online portal to understand what ‘good’ work looks like.

The BFI has awarded Design Otherwise funding to undertake research to better understand how Good Work principles can be applied to film and television production and how this can be delivered.

Good Work explores what makes jobs fulfilling or challenging. It emphasises the value of listening to diverse perspectives in building innovative and productive workplaces.

As part of this research, which is led by internationally leading academics with industry expertise, Design Otherwise has launched WorkTakes: Good Work for UK film and TV, one take at a time, a new online portal to engage industry workers, sector stakeholders and company executives in a conversation about what ‘good’ work looks like. This aims to help the film, broadcast television and high-end television sectors and other stakeholders, including WorkWise for Screen, trade bodies and the UK government, to understand how working practices can be better and how to make this ‘better’ the norm.

The research findings have the potential to inform the industry’s Good Work interventions and policy asks, identify and shape the professional development needs of Heads of Departments and Executives, and improve working conditions for the screen production workforce, in turn helping to retain expertise and reduce costs associated with repeated recruitment and training of new workers.

The online platform, WorkTakes: Good Work for UK film and TV, one take at a time, is now live and welcomes contributions from workers, company executives and sector stakeholders.

Share your take on Good Work on the WorkTakes platform.

This project is supported by the BFI Research and Statistics Fund awarding National Lottery funding.
