This horizon-scanning report by DotEcon was commissioned through the BFI Research and Statistics Fund, awarding National Lottery Funding, with support and advice from UK industry stakeholders, including the Fund’s external Advisory Group. It is part of our work to research, track and report on trends in the global screen sector to benefit the UK industry.
The report was explicitly designed as a review of regulatory policies overseas and excludes any analysis of the UK market. Looking at regulatory policies for online audiovisual services, including Video on Demand services (SVOD, AVOD, TVOD, BVOD) it includes in-depth case studies of eight countries that provide a diversity of perspectives: five in the European Union (Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany and Spain) and three outside Europe (Australia, Canada and New Zealand).
The report does not provide recommendations but was commissioned to offer a snapshot in time and designed to shed light on an emerging area of the industry. It is limited to available data and also includes interviews with relevant stakeholders as well as literature research.
Informing UK screen companies and industry bodies about regulatory developments in a rapidly changing global market, the report aims to help companies to better exploit overseas markets – for example, by helping the formation of their strategic business plans, which is crucial to the health of our indigenous sector. In the context of increasing interest from UK production companies in international co-production, the report aims to support UK screen companies to align their plans with international markets, as well as the need to drive increased growth by enhancing exports.
