Screen Heritage Skills Research

Research to better understand skills and training needs in the screen heritage sector.

In response to multiple challenges facing the screen heritage sector workforce, Harlow Consulting was commissioned through the BFI Research and Statistics Fund, awarding National Lottery funding, to undertake research that delivers a better understanding of workforce needs in the sector.

The research found that:

  • Both the entry routes into the sector and training pathways within it are diffuse and not formalised, which, combined with a lack of professional accreditation for the roles in the sector, creates a major barrier to skills development and training for individuals.
  • There is a real appetite for training among the workforce, but the need is highly varied, access is uneven, and participation in training is hampered by a range of factors.
  • Knowledge sharing is valued and effective.
  • Discrete, tailored interventions are required to respond to specific areas of need.

The report recommends several interventions, grouped under the following headings:

  • Support for the industry: for example developing a competency framework and central repository for sharing information.
  • Entry routes into the sector: including funding traineeships and placements within film archives.
  • Industry training: such as devising a suite of tailored short courses and a focus on flexible delivery to overcome geographical barrier.
