Inside the Archive #71: Online video and the archive assembly
This week, learn about a brand-new collection on BFI Replay and our assembly celebrating the archive’s progress, planning, and future.

Introducing the Online Video collection
As previously reported via the Inside the Archive #14 blog, the BFI National Archive has recently immersed itself in the world of online moving image.
Thanks to the Our Screen Heritage project (supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery funding), the archive has added over 400 online videos to its holdings charting the vast array of styles and formats that have emerged (so far!) during the internet age.
We’re delighted to present a sample of these acquisitions via our new Online Video collection, available to view on the new and improved BFI Replay – the BFI’s go to destination for free-to-view material from the BFI National Archive and partner archives from across the UK.
Alongside 50 examples of groundbreaking online moving image works, you can also find a series of specially recorded interviews with some of the creators behind the acquired works. Hear from Lucy Edwards, Chetna Makan and the team behind cult classic Junior Spesh, Red Hot Entertainment, as they discuss their online careers and how they feel about having their work included in the national collection.
To learn more about the work behind the project, make sure to watch our new documentary, Inside the Archive: collecting online moving image, on the BFI’s YouTube channel, and stay tuned for our forthcoming long read, All About… online moving image.
We look forward to sharing more insights about the collection in future editions of the blog.
Archive assembly

The Knowledge, Learning and Collections (KLC) directorate, which encompasses all of the various teams who maintain and curate the BFI National Archive, recently came together for a special away day.
Hosted in Berkhamsted Town Hall, the event saw colleagues celebrate successes of the past 12 months and look ahead at some of the exciting projects that will commence during the new financial year.
The day featured engaging presentations about business priorities, archive programming and updates to the archive’s facilities and systems – it promises to be an exciting few months!
We look forward to sharing more news about these developments in due course and hearing more from the teams delivering this vital work.
