New BFI Blu-rays and DVDs announced for summer 2020

Highlights among the BFI’s July-September home entertainment releases include a Woodfall wonder, a Peter Sellers caper and a Frank Capra classic.

Equus (1977)


A host of big screen legends arrive on BFI Blu-ray and DVD this summer across a diverse slate of releases. This August, Richard Burton stars in Sidney Lumet’s gripping adaptation of Equus (1977). Adapted by Peter Shaffer from his own landmark, Tony-winning play, this gripping psychological thriller comes to Blu-ray for the very first time in the UK.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mademoiselle (1966)


In September, the mesmerising Mademoiselle (1966) arrives on Blu-ray for the very first time. Featuring a powerful central performance from Jeanne Moreau as a violently sociopathic school teacher, this milestone mid-1960s thriller, directed by Tony Richardson (Tom Jones), will be released on dual format edition Blu-ray and DVD.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After The Fox (1966)


Peter Sellers stars as a conman disguised as a film director in After the Fox (1966), directed by Vittorio De Sica (Bicycle Thieves). Co-starring Victor Mature and Britt Ekland, this zany caper, farce and satire is released on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK this September.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pocketful of Miracles (1961)


September also sees the Blu-ray release of It’s a Wonderful Life director Frank Capra’s final film, Pocketful of Miracles (1961). Starring Bette Davis, Glenn Ford, Hope Lange and Peter Falk, this charming urban fairy tale is a classic Hollywood comedy from one of America’s most celebrated talents.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Good Die Young (1954)


As previously announced, Stanley Baker, Joan Collins, Gloria Grahame and Laurence Harvey star in crime drama The Good Die Young this July. Directed by Lewis Gilbert (The Spy Who Loved Me, Alfie), this all-star and newly remastered British thriller will be released on dual format edition Blu-ray and DVD.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Guinea Pig (1948)


July also sees the Boulting brothers’ 1948 drama The Guinea Pig receive its first ever Blu-ray release. Starring a young Richard Attenborough, this landmark British class-conflict melodrama is presented in a new 2K remaster.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BFI Maborosi Blu-ray

 

And finally, July and August sees Hirokazu Koreeda’s Maborosi (1995) and After Life (1998) receive standalone Blu-ray releases. Previously available as part of the Of Flesh and Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Koreeda box set, these two early films from the Japanese maestro are released as part of the BFI Japan season, which runs throughout summer 2020.
