BAFTAs 2015: the winners in full

Boyhood has been named best film at this year’s BAFTA awards, with Richard Linklater also awarded as best director and Patricia Arquette winning best supporting actress. With a total of five awards, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is the evening’s most awarded film, recognised for its original screenplay, makeup/hair, both costume and production design, and for its music.

The Theory of Everything won the award for outstanding British film as well as best adapted screenplay and best actor for Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of the young Stephen Hawking.

Winners of outstanding British debut are Stephen Beresford (writer) and David Livingstone (producer) for Pride, which was backed by the BFI Film Fund.

Although it received 10 nominations, Birdman took home only one prize, for Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography. It was also a disappointing night for The Imitation Game, which went empty-handed in all nine of its nominated categories.

As expected, Julianne Moore was named best actress for Still Alice, while J.K. Simmons took best supporting actor for Whiplash. Whiplash was also recognised for its sound and editing.

Previously a winner of the best film award at the BFI London Film Festival, the Polish drama Ida was awarded best film not in the English language. Director Pawel Pawlikowski movingly dedicated the award to the late Chris Collins, production executive at the BFI Film Fund.

After infamously being snubbed for a nomination for this year’s Oscars, The Lego Movie is named BAFTA’s best animated film of the year. Short animation winner was The Bigger Picture, while best short film was Boogaloo and Graham.

Best documentary winner Citizenfour, Whiplash, Birdman and Ida were all first seen by UK audiences at the BFI London Film Festival.

The winners were announced at a ceremony hosted by Stephen Fry at London’s Royal Opera House, which climaxed with a BAFTA Fellowship being handed to Mike Leigh.
