First ever international BFI Summer Screenings event announced

From City Lights to The Life Aquatic, we're curating a weekend of classic summer films and children's workshops at the Hillside Beach Club in Turkey.

BFI Summer Screenings 2018 at Hillside Beach Club

This summer the BFI is bringing classic cinema to the Hillside Beach Club, a five-star luxury resort located in a private bay in Fethiye, Turkey. Taking place in May half term (24-30 May 2018), the BFI Summer Screenings will include a long weekend of films and children’s interactive workshops, curated by the BFI, for both adults and children staying at the resort, to educate them on the creation and history of film.

There will be a combination of classic summer films screened in various areas of the resort throughout the course of the long weekend. Will Massa, curator of contemporary fiction film at the BFI, will be bringing the films to life with screen talks, giving special insight into our classic film selection.

Films will include Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights at the relaxing adults-only Silent Beach, Wes Anderson’s underwater adventure comedy The Life Aquatic on Hillside’s private sailing boat, and Hollywood hit La La Land at the resort’s iconic main beach.

Children’s workshops will take place throughout the event, educating kids on filmmaking, production skills, creative storytelling, script writing as well as prop and costume making. The workshops will give children the opportunity to create a short adventure-based film, edited by experts from the BFI, which will then be enjoyed by the whole family at a celebratory screening on the last day.

There will also be family film nights, complete with popcorn and beanbags, showing classics such as Swallows and Amazons, Paddington and Mary Poppins.

“Settling into your cinema seat before a film starts is one of life’s great pleasures,” Massa says, “but screening a series of classics under the stars at Hillside will be unbeatable. I can’t wait to dig deeper into the films with the audience, discussing their history, impact and enduring magic.”
