My choices reflect the cinemas I know best (French, North American and Italian), films that I love, that I see again and again and also have on occasion taught. Also films with great stars, like Jean Gabin, Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon or Mahershala Ali. I am of course aware of so many others that I cannot comment on. However, these are all brilliant films that show a range of possibilities for the art of cinema as well as the welcome rise of women and non-white filmmakers and actors.
