Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Beautiful, ethereal, hilarious, childlike. Captures a state between dreaming and waking realms perfectly. Jim Carrey is sincere and affecting in his role as the shy, heartbroken Joel. Jon Brion's soundtrack provides the perfect melancholic backdrop.
2046
Visually lush mix of science fiction and romantic longing. It's a world I wish I lived in, full of longing stares and beautiful outfits.
Brazil
The blueprint for dystopian worlds. Perhaps after Blade Runner. Definitely nails down the bureaucracy of modern British life, even if it's set in the near future.
Le Cinquième élément
Cringey but heartfelt sci-fi that hooked me in with the sincerity underneath all it's dated effects and cheesy one liners. Jean Paul Gaultier's costume design for this film set the standard for neo-futuristic fashion!
The Nightmare before Christmas
Highly original mish mash of Halloween and Christmas themes, with catchy tunes and beautiful set design. Oogy boogie must be up there as one of the funkiest villains.
Synecdoche, New York
Highly cerebral and maybe somewhat pretentious, but managed to sweep me with it's existential charm. The funeral monologue made me happy to be alive.
Stalker
Slow burning sci-fi beast. Cinematography is stunning. It's pace might bore people but I found it contemplative and terrifying: like a glimpse into Earth's future.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Gorgeously shot piece filled with quiet, determined lust and longing.
Spirited Away
Thinking of this film makes my heart simultaneously break and glow with its beauty and story. A true fairy tale to last for the ages and for me, it's pure, nostalgic comfort for a life i've not lived.
There Will Be Blood
A film which grips you from beginning to end. I couldn't take my eyes off Daniel Day Lewis and every time his presence was on screen, I felt tense. STUNNING score from Jonny Greenwood.
