Inclusion targets

Diversity targets for the people we employ and projects we support using National Lottery funds.

Why we have inclusion targets

A clearly defined and communicated set of inclusion targets help us to monitor and take greater accountability for our progress in this area. They give clarity and a clear direction to colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

We regularly report against our inclusion targets using self-identified diversity data.

Our inclusion targets

Our current targets were set in October 2023 and are:

  • Disability: 18%
    • anyone who identifies as Disabled, including people with longstanding physical or mental conditions and people identifying as Deaf or neurodiverse
  • Ethnicity (London): 40%
    • anyone who identifies as Black and Global Majority
  • Ethnicity (outside London): 30%
    • anyone who identifies as Black and Global Majority
  • Gender: 50:50
    • the balance of those identifying within the gender binary, including trans men and trans women
    • we also monitor those who identify as non-binary or other self-described terms, but we do not have targets for this or publish this data
  • Sexual orientation: 10%
    • anyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual or with a self-described term (LGB+)
    • trans and non-binary identities are monitored within gender category data
  • Socio-economic background: 39%

Changes to our inclusion targets

Our inclusion targets are based on proportionality of the UK’s working age population and are revised regularly.

We routinely evaluate this work to ensure our approach is relevant and up to date, which includes consultation with peer organisations, community groups and staff networks to ensure good practice and benchmarking.

Since October 2023, we’ve updated some of the language in our inclusion monitoring, this includes:

  • ethnicity targets to align with our preferred terms for inclusive language
  • gender and sexuality targets to ensure existing data can be reported on clearly and accurately

Additional inclusion data we collect and monitor

We collect data on a range of other protected characteristics, for which we do not set targets or publish data.

We collect and monitor data related to age, religion and beliefs, education, nationality and data related to trans and non-binary identities.

We publish data for caring responsibilities and returning to work where data is available.

To understand why we collect this information, check the equality monitoring guidance document below. You can also see the questions we ask and responses we offer.
